Mental health issues during pregnancy

With the body going through a multitude of hormonal and physical changes during pregnancy, some women experience mental health problems for the first time. Those who have had mental health issues in the past are also more likely to experience mental ill health during and after pregnancy. However, each person and pregnancy is unique and some who have experienced mental ill health in the past and some who haven’t, will not experience any issues during pregnancy. However, it is important to be aware of the risks and the options available to you.

Many expectant mothers are unwilling to tell anyone if they are experiencing symptoms of ill health due to the fear of being judged as a prospective parent.

Ahmeys healthcare professionals are here to listen to any concerns or worries you may be feeling without judgement and will make sure you get the right treatment for you.

Our clinicians are able to prescribe medication to help alleviate symptoms. However, taking medicine may carry risks for your unborn baby. Equally, not taking medication you may need also carries risks. We are here to help make you aware of these risks and help discuss the most appropriate course of treatment for you.

In addition to medicine, there are a number of talking therapies and support groups available that we can refer you to that can be very effective in ensuring you have healthier mental wellbeing and pregnancy.
